The signing-year tax map: what to decide before the bonus lands

Published 8 Jul 2026 · Last reviewed 28 Jul 2026 · 6 min read · Athletes & Entertainers

A signing year is a planning year. Residency and domicile, the states where duty days will fall, how endorsements are structured, and when the bonus is actually paid, each decision changes the after-tax result, and most of them are hard to reverse.

Map the year in three layers: where income is earned, which entity receives it, and when it is recognized. Then set the estimated-tax calendar and the liquidity reserve before commitments are made against gross numbers.

The goal is not aggressive positions. It is making the ordinary decisions, residency, timing, structure, reserves, deliberately, with your CPA and counsel at the table, while the calendar still allows it.
